Hey, why aim for better when you can keep on settling, am I right? But Shinji really should have been played by a woman to begin with (only reason he wasn't was because of ADV's limited resources way back when), and Funimation keeping Spencer on board just to placate preexisting dub fans. If you can get immersed in a film despite the main character being miscast as an adult man who is clearly struggling, and failing, with the required vocal range, more power to you I suppose. He can't pull off the emotional range to make it work. whereas Spencer's Shinji was absolutely insufferable. I sat through the Q dub in a theater, and found noticeable improvements in Grant and Keith-Shipp.

but, for those who chose to look around and take chances on more savory fare, there is undoubtedly better. The fast food version is cheap, easy to come by, and has the dubious advantage of familiarity.

By the same token, you could say something like, "there are plenty of people for whom the Big Mac is the hamburger". Pwhodges wrote:Whatever the haters say, there are also plenty of people out there for whom Spike is Shinji. I also remember the bit where Shinji kept saying "yes" scanned as Shinji mocking Misato, rather than ignoring her. I remember thinking the "don't you mean his heart?" line was a joke about how Misato was stupid and didn't understand technobabble, not a reference to Ritsuko's analytical mindset. Instead of being played as flirty, Misato was played a child in a woman's body. Instead of playing Shinji as a child with no self-esteem, Spike played Shinji as an obnoxious brat. It's been discussed on this forum before how ADV couldn't take their time and had to use every take that was the least bit usable, but while that does explain the problems with the dub, it doesn't make it more tolerable. It has all to do with the direction, or lackthereof, ADV gave.

The issue most people have with Spike, IMHO, has nothing to do with Spike. He also sounds more like a 14 year old than Jason Ritter (the voice of Dipper Pines) sounds like a 12 year old. The line "I feel awkward and uneasy" looks ridiculous on paper, but it sounds totally natural coming out of Spike's mouth. I actually think Spike is a perfect Shinji when he's being directed properly. You really have to appreciate Spike though, he still has a sense of humor despite voicing one of the most divisive characters in anime history, and being the punching bag for the sub only crowd to rail against. Saying he's 'too whiny', or 'he sounds too old for Shinji'.
